Improvement/Rational - I have a number of students that come and help shelve books, do processing/taping, put away books every lunch hour. I also chat with them and we share funny things on the computer plus I play my guitar for them. They love coming in to visit.
One idea that sprung out of this was to create a book club. Once a month we could spend lunch sitting down as a group and discussing some of the issues, concerns and themes of the book. This would help these students that move on to high school as they will be more familiar with taking about these parts of the books.
Timeline - This can be started as soon as spring break is over as we can meet, pick a book and we all have a month to read it.
Concerns - There are concerns that the students won't read the book or the numbers will be high interest at the start but fall off quickly. I will have to come up with a plan that makes this fun and enjoyable for these kids. Perhaps things like popcorn snacks while we discuss the books. I will also have to figure out if I open this to all grades or only grade 6/7 or grade 4/5. The students in grade 4/5 are the most interested in hanging out in the library at lunch, but I wonder if the 6/7s would like a club like this and the students in 4/5 would be a little jealous and cannot wait to be old enough to do this and treat is like a 'perk' to be in grade 6/7.
Improvement - A book club in a library, what a great idea. I think it would work and it would be free, plus another way to get kids into the library at lunch time.
Communication Plan - I will have to talk with the teachers and ask what they think and if their students would like this. Then I will create a list of rules/guidelines so the club has some structure to it. Things that we are going to talk about after it is done. Expectations from the students and from myself for them. I will have to make sure it is a fun book that is new and exciting and that we have enough copies to read as a group. In order to get copies for free I can borrow them from the other schools in the district.
Challenges - A lunch our club might be an issue for us this year as we are in job action and our district just cut our extra-curricular activities. We are waiting until after spring break to get the official list of what is allowed and not allowed. This could go on for awhile. However, once job action is over this could be a great idea for a club.
