Games Club

Improvement/Rational - This year we had a teacher who was doing a chess club, however he was on a temporary contract. His club was successful. Now that he is gone, I thought I would offer to continue this service with the students and create it more into a games club over lunch. This would create another reason to go to the library. I do not want my library to be all about books. Currently I have many students that visit over lunch and they help sort shelves, stamp/process books, and put away books, plus I play my guitar for them. I see this games club as an opportunity to provide a service to a group of students that might not consider hanging out in the library normally over lunch. This also gets these students into the library during times when they probably would never visit.

Improvements - Our principal bought a number of chess sets that were left in this classroom and the returning teacher will not be using them. So it is a matter of talking with her about getting these chess sets into the library.

Communication Plan - A simple talk to the kids using my tables at lunch making sure they are finishing their lunch in their classrooms before they come into the library and of course a talk about behaviour, meaning, there is no need for running and yelling during this time.

Challenges - Making sure the students behave and do not use the library as a 'gym'. The biggest immediate challenge might be union related as our school district (and most others in BC) have recently passed rules stating 'no extra-curriclar activities' until we have a contract that is not forced on us. So the noon-hour clubs might be on hold until this is cleared.
